The Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) is a semi-deciduous tree with small, serrated leaves, which typically do not drop in the Lowcountry climate. Chinese elms are a popular choice for both beginner and experienced bonsai practitioners. They are strong trees that respond well to pruning and can be kept either indoors or outdoors.

Watering Water daily through the growing season, more frequently during the heat of the summer, if needed.
Repotting Annually in early spring until about the age of 10, then as necessary. Make sure to inspect the roots annually.
Pruning The Chinese Elm responds well to pruning. Trim new shoots back to one or two sets of leaves.
